One of the main causes of hair loss in men is a genetically inherited condition known as male pattern baldness. It may manifest itself in its initial stages with a weak or lifeless look to the hair at the front of the head, but it will often take more than a few years to develop. So what is its cause and how is it carried through the genes? It is now known that the mother of a man is one of the principal “reasons” for male pattern baldness. But people have known this anecdotally for years. Major studies that were carried out in 2005 and 2007 show the maternal line of inheritance as being strongly emphasised in male pattern baldness. This does not mean that a mother of a man suffering male pattern baldness is herself bald; but if her brothers are bald, it is likely that her son will be. Meanwhile, the father of the same man who suffers male pattern baldness need not necessarily be bald at all, and neither need his brothers be bald. This may be touted as a cutting edge discovery, but many sufferers of male pattern baldness have known anecdotally for years that this is the case.
